The Fijian Methodist Hymn Book is now available online, free of charge! Written in the Fijian language, this hymnal is fully scripture-based. It is designed for use by all ages of Methodists in Fiji. While it can be used as a songbook or worship resource for any Christian denomination, it has been developed primarily with the Fijian Methodist Church in mind.
The hymnal includes a foreword written by the Registrar of the Fijian Methodist Church, Rev. Dr. Charles Wutuarauca, which explains why it has been written. It also contains a brief history of the church and its beliefs. The hymnal's main body consists of hymns and psalms, divided into six categories: "God Our Father," "Christ Our Savior," "Believers' Response," "Prophets' Praise," "Saints' Songs" and "Creation's Praise. Each hymn provides a verse and chorus for singing, with an explanation of the hymn's meaning. The hymnal contains all the hymns the Fijian Methodist Church has used for over sixty years, covering a wide range of topics. They have been chosen to reflect our theology, theology that is based on the Bible, including The Laws of God through His Word, Jesus Christ. The booklet also includes two songs that are part of our annual worship service. These are "I will Sing to God" which expresses praise to God for answering prayers by building his church in Fiji; and "God be praised" which expresses praise to God for making good things happen in our lives through His Word. Several well-known hymns translated into Fijian are also included. These include "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Nothing but the Blood of Jesus." The original Fijian Methodist Hymn Book was compiled by Pastor Fatai Tabusala in 1957. Rev. Tabusala translated eighty English hymns, psalms (including the Doxology) and spiritual songs into Fijian. Among these were traditional hymns like "Jesus Loves Me" and 'Abide with Me," which he translated into the Fijian language for the first time ever. He also adapted some old Methodist Fijian spirituals into English for the new hymnal. In total, he selected 212 hymns for the new hymnbook. He then edited, compiled and published it in Suva, Fiji. In 1997, Rev. Tabusala's daughter-in-law Rev. Limare Tabusala (nee Wini), who is married to his son Rev. Dr Wesley Tabusala (Senior Pastor of the CWM), decided to begin translating the hymnal into English in order to make it more accessible to all members of The Fiji Methodist Church nationwide and not just its membership in Central Division (Nadi).
